In a domain\u2019s registration record, the technical contact is the role your registrar<\/a> emails about name server, DNS<\/a>, or DNSSEC problems with a domain name<\/a>. If an agency runs your site, its support@ address is the right technical contact. If you manage everything yourself, it\u2019s you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The registrant contact, not the technical contact, is how registrars and everyone else reach a domain\u2019s owner, so keep those details current. ICANN\u2019s rules give you 7 days to update contact information after it changes and 15 days to answer a verification email, and unanswered verification can get a domain suspended. Your registrar also has to remind you once a year to review the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside domain registration, \u201ctechnical contact\u201d can also informally mean whoever handles a website\u2019s technical upkeep, often but not always the same person. For a website, the technical contact is whoever the owner designates, usually the developer or the hosting account administrator. Record it in your hosting account or team documentation; your registrar doesn\u2019t track it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optional for gTLDs since August 2025<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Under ICANN\u2019s Registration Data Policy<\/a>, in effect since August 21, 2025, registrars no longer have to collect a technical contact for generic TLDs like .com, and the administrative and billing contacts were retired entirely. Registrars that still offer the field collect at most a name, phone number, and email address, only with your consent, and the email can be a role address like support@example.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many registrars dropped the field ahead of the deadline; Enom, for example, stopped collecting technical contact data for gTLDs on June 30, 2025. So if you can\u2019t find a technical contact in your registrar panel or in WHOIS<\/a> results, that\u2019s why. What registrars still hold is mostly redacted in public lookups, and domain privacy<\/a> masks anything that remains. These rules cover generic TLDs; country-code TLDs like .uk and .de set their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
