When Google evaluates a page for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/glossary\/seo\/ranking\/\">ranking<\/a>, it weighs the pattern all your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/glossary\/seo\/backlink\/\">backlinks<\/a> make together, not any one link on its own, as the diagram above shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes up a link profile?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Referring domains.<\/strong> How many different websites link to you. A hundred links from a hundred sites is generally a far stronger signal than a hundred links from one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Authority.<\/strong> Links from established, trusted sites pass more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/glossary\/seo\/link-juice\/\">link equity<\/a>, or ranking value, than links from unknown ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anchor text.<\/strong> The clickable words in each link. A natural profile is mostly brand names, bare URLs, and phrases like &#8220;this guide,&#8221; not the same keyword repeated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relevance.<\/strong> Links from sites in your topic area count for more than random ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does a healthy link profile look like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earned and uneven. A healthy profile grows slowly, mixes high- and low-authority sources, includes plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/glossary\/seo\/nofollow-attribute\/\">nofollow<\/a> links, and uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/glossary\/seo\/anchor-text\/\">anchor text<\/a> that varies because different people wrote it. The suspicious pattern is the tidy one: hundreds of links appearing in a burst, all from low-quality sites, all repeating the exact keyword the site wants to rank for. That&#8217;s the pattern link spam produces, and the one Google&#8217;s spam systems are trained to catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you check your link profile?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/glossary\/seo\/google-search-console\/\">Google Search Console<\/a>, which lists your top linked pages, top linking sites, and most common link text for free in its Links report. SEO tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz maintain their own link indexes with deeper filters.
