A CTA is typically a button or link with a command, such as “Add to Cart” or “Share Now”. Plenty of actions need no prompt at all, though. Reading a second article or scrolling down a pricing page counts too.

Actions vs. conversions

An action is anything a visitor does on your site. A conversion is an action you’ve decided to count as a business goal. The terms get used interchangeably, but they aren’t the same thing:

Action: any interaction a visitor takes, like clicking a button, sharing a post on social media, joining an email list, or adding a product to the cart.

Conversion: an action the site owner has defined as a goal, such as a completed purchase, a submitted quote request, or a newsletter signup.

Every conversion is an action, but not every action is a conversion. When visitors take plenty of actions and few of them convert, closing that gap is the job of conversion rate optimization (CRO).

One primary action per page

Pick one primary action for each page and make everything else secondary. On a pricing page, the primary action is “Start now”; “Compare plans” supports it and should look secondary. A page with 5 equally weighted CTAs rarely converts on any of them, because no single next step stands out.

Before you touch design or copy, write down the one action each key page exists to produce. If you can’t name it, that page doesn’t have a job yet.

Tracking actions in Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) records visitor actions as events. The workflow takes 3 steps:

Decide which action matters on each page, usually the primary action you just defined.

Record that action as an event in GA4, and mark the ones you treat as goals as key events (the setting Google renamed from “conversions” in 2024).

Review the Key events column in GA4’s reports to see how many visitors complete the action, and which channels they arrive from.

Our guide to creating events and measuring conversions in GA4 walks through the setup step by step. An action you don’t measure is one you can’t improve.

What is an action in web design?
